Long bones are characterized by their structure, which includes being very strong and having broad ends. The ends of long bones are known as epiphyses and are designed to provide a large surface area for muscle attachment. This anatomical feature is instrumental in facilitating movement and bearing weight, which makes them critical in locomotion and supporting the body. The shaft, or diaphysis, of long bones is also crucial as it houses the medullary cavity filled with bone marrow.

In contrast, short bones are typically about as wide as they are long and provide stability and support with limited movement. Flat bones serve primarily to protect internal organs and provide a large surface area for muscle attachment but do not possess the same elongated shape as long bones. Sesamoid bones, such as the patella, are small, round bones that develop within tendons and primarily function to protect tendons, increasing their mechanical advantage. Each type of bone has unique characteristics suited to its specific functions, with long bones being particularly vital for their strength and ability to support muscle attachment.
